Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

The contents of the shalawat recitation: The meaning of shalawat differs according to who is sending the shalawat: As for shalawat from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic): it is the praise of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) for him before His angels. As Abul ‘Aliyah (may Allah the Exalted have mercy on him) said: "صَلاَةُ اللَّهِ: ثَنَاؤُهُ عَلَيْهِ عِنْدَ المَلاَئِكَةِ، وَصَلاَةُ المَلاَئِكَةِ الدُّعَاءُ" “The shalawat of Allah is His praise of him (peace and blessings be upon him) before the angels, and the shalawat of the angels upon him is dua.” (Shahih Al-Bukhari 6/120) Some scholars say: shalawat from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) is mercy. But this is not quite accurate, because Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) says: أُولَئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ [translation not shown] In this verse Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) explains that they receive shalawat and mercy from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic), which shows that shalawat is something different from the mercy of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Whereas shalawat from the angels and from the believers for him is dua, and asking for forgiveness and blessing for him. As Abul ‘Aliyah said: وَصَلاةُ الْمَلائِكَةِ عَلَيْهِ: الدُّعَاءُ لَهُ “And the shalawat of the angels is dua for him.” (Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim 10/3152) And Ibn Abbas also said: يُصَلُّونَ: يُبَرِّكُونَ [translation not shown] Adh-Dhahhak also interpreted shalawat upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as: صلاة الله: رحمته، وصلاة الملائكة: الدعاء “The shalawat of Allah is His mercy, and the shalawat of the angels is dua.” (Syarhu Bukhori by Ibn Battal, 10/115) And Ibn Muflih Al-Hanbali said: فقد قَالَ كثير من الْعلمَاء: (إِن الصَّلَاة من الله الرَّحْمَة، وَمن الْمَلَائِكَة الاسْتِغْفَار، وَمن العَبْد التضرع وَالدُّعَاء). “And many scholars have said: shalawat from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) is mercy, from the angels it is asking for forgiveness, and from human beings it is humility and dua.” (At-Tahbir Syarh At-Tahrir, 1/67) And the phrase (aali muhammad, آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ): they are the people who are not entitled to receive zakat, and they are Banu Hashim. As the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: أما علمت أن آل محمد لا يأكلون الصدقة [translation not shown] And he said: إنا أهل بيت لا تحل لنا الصدقة [translation not shown] (Narrated by An-Nasa'i 2612) In sending shalawat upon the Prophet there are many virtues that a Muslim will obtain. Among them is what was narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: مَن صلَّى عليَّ صلاةً واحدةً، صَلى اللهُ عليه عَشْرَ صَلَوَاتٍ، وحُطَّتْ عنه عَشْرُ خَطياتٍ، ورُفِعَتْ له عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ [translation not shown]
