Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].
This great dua opens with beautiful praises of Allah, making tawassul through Allah's rububiyyah (lordship) and His uluhiyyah (divinity), and then asks Allah for protection.
(فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَاْلأَرْضِ): who creates from nothing into existence, and creates without any prior example.
(عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ): for Allah, the unseen and the visible are exactly the same; what is open and what is hidden are exactly the same in Allah's sight.
(رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيْكَهُ): so nothing at all lies outside Allah's creation and ownership, including Iblis and his troops.
After making tawassul through Allah's rububiyyah, one then makes tawassul through His uluhiyyah: (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ)
Only after praising Him does one begin the dua asking for His protection:
(أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِيْ): how often we see only the evil of others and forget that we ourselves can also be a source of evil.
(وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ): that is, protection from the temptation of Satan, which is very heavy, because Satan is an unseen enemy who keeps on tempting without ever stopping and comes at people from every direction. And among the most dangerous of Satan's temptations is his call to shirk.
It is also narrated with the wording وَشَرَكِهِ wa syarokihi ([translation not shown]): meaning seeking refuge from the snares and trap-ropes laid by Satan (see Mirqootul Mafaatiih 4/1659), because Satan's snares for preying on and catching the children of Adam are very many and varied.
This dua is the most complete form of seeking protection with regard to the sources of evil, both the internal source of evil, namely the evil of the soul, and the external source of evil, namely Satan, with his snares and traps. Likewise, the outcomes of these sources of evil are two: bringing harm upon oneself or upon others (see Badaa’i al-Fawaid, by Ibn Al-Qayyim 2/209)
