(O Ever Living, O Self-Subsisting and Supporter of all, by Your mercy I seek assistance, rectify for me all of my affairs and do not leave me to myself, even for the blink of an eye.)
Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].
(يَا حَيُّ), that is, Allah's life is without beginning and without end, unlike the creatures whose life began from non-existence; or some creatures (such as the people of Paradise and of Hell) live on eternally, yet their eternity is not of themselves: it is because Allah makes them everlasting by His power.
(يَا قَيُّوْمُ), that is, Allah is the Self-Subsisting, who stands by Himself and has no need whatsoever of His creatures, and at the same time Allah upholds everything else. That is, the creatures can only stand if Allah upholds them; they cannot stand by themselves.
These two names, Al-Hayyu al-Qoyyuum, are ismullah al-a’dzom (the most noble name of Allah). For the name Al-Hayyu encompasses all of Allah's attributes of perfection, since all of Allah's attributes of perfection follow from the attribute of being Ever-Living. There is no weakness in any being except because of the weakness and imperfection of its attribute of hayat (life). As for Al-Qoyyum, it contains the perfection of Allah's attribute of being Rich beyond need, of Allah's having no need of anything else, and it shows Allah's All-Powerfulness, because no creature can stand unless it is upheld/made to stand by Allah. (See Badaai'ul Fawaaid 2/184)
(بِرَحْمَتِكَ), which encompasses all things, (أَسْتَغِيْثُ).
Then (أَصْلِحْ لِيْ شَأْنِيْ كُلَّهُ), that is, in general, covering the affairs of this world and of the Hereafter. (وَلاَ تَكِلْنِيْ إِلَى نَفْسِيْ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ), because (1) my self is weak and unable to meet my own needs, (2) indeed my own soul is at times a greater enemy than all my other enemies, and (3) my self does not know what is good for me and what is bad. I may rush into something that I think is good, only for it to bring harm. (Mirqootul Mafaatiih 4/1697)
