HOW TO MEMORISE
Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

This dua is very important because it asks for well-being in this world and the Hereafter, namely to be kept safe from every evil in this world, from diseases, calamities and disasters, and from evils connected with oneself, one's family or one's wealth. Likewise, well-being from every evil connected with one's religion, and indeed from every evil in the Hereafter. That is why the Prophet said: سَلُوا الله العَفْوَ والعافيةَ، فإنَّ أحداً لَم يُعْطَ بعد اليَقين خَيراً من العافية [translation not shown] (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, no. 3558, and graded sahih by Al-Albani in Shahih al-Jaami’, no. 3632) (اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِى) that is, cover my 'awrah, my shortcomings, my faults, and everything about me that it would not be good to have revealed. Women should pay attention to this dua, bearing in mind how many Muslim women in this age of fitnah uncover part of their 'awrah. When many Muslim women uncover part of their 'awrah, it comes to seem like something normal, and this draws other women into taking the uncovering of their 'awrah lightly. (وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِى) that is, keep me far from everything that frightens me. (اَللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِيْ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ، وَمِنْ خَلْفِيْ، وَعَنْ يَمِيْنِيْ…) that is, protection from harm that comes to attack from those six directions, whether harm in the form of physical disaster, or harm that is no less dangerous, namely the temptation of Satan, who tempts from every side.
