HOW TO MEMORISE
Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

Al-istighfaar means asking for sins to be covered and at the same time to be protected from the evil consequences of sins. Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali said: وَالِاسْتِغْفَارُ: طَلَبُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ، وَالْمَغْفِرَةُ: هِيَ وِقَايَةُ شَرِّ الذُّنُوبِ مَعَ سِتْرِهَا “Istighfar is asking for maghfirah, and maghfirah is protection from the evil consequences of sins together with their being covered.” (Jaami al-‘Uluum wa al-Hikam 2/407) So istighfar is not only asking that our sins be covered. Ibn Al-Qayyim said about istighfar: وَحَقِيقَتُهَا وِقَايَةُ شَرِّ الذَّنْبِ، وَمِنْهُ الْمِغْفَرُ، لِمَا يَقِي الرَّأْسَ مِنَ الْأَذَى، وَالسَّتْرُ لَازِمٌ لِهَذَا الْمَعْنَى، وَإِلَّا فَالْعِمَامَةُ لَا تُسَمَّى مِغْفَرًا، وَلَا الْقُبَّعُ وَنَحْوُهُ مَعَ سَتْرِهِ، فَلَا بُدَّ فِي لَفْظِ الْمِغْفَرِ مِنَ الْوِقَايَةِ “That is, asking Allah for maghfirah, which is the erasing of the sin and the removal of its effect/trace, as well as protection from the evil (consequences) of that sin. It is not as some people suppose, that maghfirah means only as-sitr (the sin being covered). For Allah covers sins (does not expose them) both for those who ask for maghfirah and for those who do not ask for maghfirah… and the reality of maghfirah is protection from the evil of the sin; from this meaning comes al-mighfar (that is, the head covering worn by soldiers in battle - author's note), because its function is to protect the head from harm. As for the head being covered, that is a necessary consequence of a protector. That is why a turban or a songkok (cap) is not called a mighfar even though it covers; so maghfirah must contain the meaning of protection/guarding.” (Madaarijus Saalikiin 1/314-315)
