Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

The content of Surah al-Ikhlash: This surah is called Surah al-Ikhlash (purification) because it is purely and exclusively about the oneness of Allah. That is why this surah is worth a third of the Qur'an: the content of the Qur'an has three parts, (1) rulings, (2) stories, and (3) at-Tauhid. So the content of Surah al-Ikhlash is a third of the Qur'an. This surah refutes every belief that tarnishes the oneness of Allah. So this surah contains the conditions for something to be "God": it must have no child, it must not have been born, and there must be nothing equal to it. For if Allah begot, then whatever was begotten would be like Allah, and Allah's oneness would be lost. And if the Prophet Isa were the son of Allah, then the father's attributes would surely be like the son's, which would entail that Allah too is like Isa, weak and destined to die.
