(O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am Your servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I have committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.)

HOW TO MEMORISE
Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

(وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ) That is, my covenant to believe in You, to obey You by carrying out all Your commands and keeping away from Your prohibitions, to the utmost of my ability. (أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ) That is, I seek refuge from the consequences of the sins I have committed. I know that sins certainly bring bad consequences in this world and in the Hereafter, but I seek refuge in You from those bad consequences. (أَبُوْءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ) That is, I acknowledge that all the favours and all the merits I have come from You. I am not self-admiring because of those favours; all those favours are purely from You. (وَأَبُوْءُ بِذَنْبِيْ). Among my sins is that I am unable to give thanks for all those favours, because there are so many of them. (Umdatul Qoori 22/279). Al-Khattabi said: بَاءَ فُلاَنٌ بِذَنْبِهِ إِذَا احْتَمَلَهُ كُرْهاً لاَ يَسْتَطِيْعُ دَفْعَهُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ “The Arabs say: “So-and-so acknowledges bearing his sin”, that is, when he bears it while hating it, only he is unable to repel it from himself.” (Ma’aalim As-Sunan 4/145). This explains how many sins we commit while aware that they are sins, and we hate falling into them, yet we are unable to free ourselves from them. (فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ) That is, forgive all my sins with Your vast mercy, Your mercy towards me that exceeds my mother's love for me. However great a sin is, however many there are, even if committed again and again, nothing is hard for You to forgive once one has repented, because You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
