HOW TO MEMORISE
Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

This dhikr contains a dua that opens with praise of Allah: an acknowledgement, as a form of gratitude, of being able to reach the morning by Allah's grace, while acknowledging that the entire dominion of the universe and every favour come only from Allah, so that all praise belongs to Allah alone. No one deserves to be worshipped except Allah alone, and He is the One who has power over all things. After praising Allah, one then asks of Him: (أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا فِيْ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ وَخَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَهُ), that is, all the good that You will to happen today for the righteous, both outward good and inward (hidden) good, and likewise on the days after today. (أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِيْ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهُ), that is, every evil that You will to happen today or on the days after it, both outward and hidden evil. (رَبِّ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ). Laziness is different from inability: a lazy person is in reality able and has the strength, only his soul is reluctant to carry it out. (وَسُوْءِ الْكِبَرِ), that is, all the bad things that appear in old age, such as senility, quickness to anger, childish behaviour, and so on.
