HOW TO MEMORISE
Explanation

Translated from Ustadz Firanda Andirja's Indonesian commentary (Bekal Islam). Quoted verses, hadith and duas keep their Arabic; where the commentary gave its own Indonesian rendering of them, that rendering is not translated and is marked [translation not shown].

In this dua we are taught to ask for three things that we greatly need: 1. Beneficial knowledge, because everything one wants to do requires knowledge, and when a deed is done without knowledge, it will only bring about corruption. Even in matters of worship we need knowledge so that we can carry out worship in accordance with what Allah wants, and none of that can be achieved without knowledge. And let us not be like the Christians, who act without knowledge, as Allah says: غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ [translation not shown] (Surah Al-Fatihah: 7). Based on this verse, Ibn Kathir says in his tafsir: “For indeed the way of the people of faith comprises knowledge of the truth and acting upon it; the Jews do not act on (their knowledge), while the Christians do not have knowledge. That is why the Jews receive wrath while the Christians receive misguidance, because whoever knows and then abandons (acting on it) deserves wrath, unlike one who does not know.” (See: Tafsir Al-Quranil ‘Azhim 1/141) 2. Asking for good provision, meaning provision that is lawful and also good, as Allah says: يا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ حَلالاً طَيِّباً وَلا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُواتِ الشَّيْطانِ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ “O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy” (Saheeh International, Qur'an 2:168) (Surah Al-Baqarah: 168) And this is one of the characteristics of the believers: they seek only lawful provision, unlike the disbelievers, who do not care about what they eat, whether it is lawful or good. 3. Accepted deeds. There is nothing a servant hopes for more than the acceptance of his deeds, and for a deed to be accepted, two conditions must be fulfilled in it: sincerity (ikhlas) and following (the Prophet, ittiba’). Moreover, when a person's deed is accepted, it shows that he was truly God-fearing when he performed that deed, as Allah says: إِنَّما يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ [translation not shown] (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 27) The conclusion: if we are not God-fearing when we perform the deeds we do, Allah will not accept them, because the verse above shows that Allah accepts deeds only from those who are God-fearing. In the dua, asking for beneficial knowledge is placed before asking for lawful provision and accepted deeds, because it is through correct knowledge that one can know which provision is beneficial and which righteous deed fulfils the requirements for being accepted by Allah. Likewise, this dua is recited after the Subuh prayer, because that is the opening of the day; after that, a servant will be guided to seek lawful provision and to do deeds that are accepted. (Recited after the salam of the Subuh prayer)
